Hot works including welding, grinding, soldering, cutting, and other activities that produce an arc or flame are hazardous.

Serious injuries, illness or fatalities can be caused by, an electric shock from contact with live components, burns and radiation burns to your eyes or body from hot metal splatter or sparks, a risk of fire, heat exhaustion, inhalation of fumes and contact with noxious materials.

This course describes the hazards associated with performing hot works such as welding, grinding, cutting and soldering. It provides information on control measures to eliminate or reduce the risks including wearing PPE, and making the work area safe, by erecting screens, displaying signage and restricting entry into designated hot work areas.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course, learners will:

  1. Understand the types of injuries, illness or fatalities as a result of performing hot works in a hazardous way.
  2. Understand the critical need to wear the correct personal protective equipment when undertaking hot works.
  3. Learn that hot works equipment must be checked before use to ensure it’s free from damage.
  4. Understand the dangers of working off conductive surfaces while undertaking hot works.
  5. Learn that it is not safe to stand in water, out in the rain, or work in damp or humid conditions when performing hot works.
  6. Learn how to make the area safe by erecting screens, signage to warn others and ensure the area is well-ventilated.
  7. Understand their responsibility to protect themselves and others while performing hot work activities.
