Permits to Work are required for designated high-risk tasks such as working at height, confined space work, performing excavation work, working in hazardous areas, performing hot work tasks, or other high-risk tasks such as abrasive blasting or work that crosses pipelines.
This course works through the general principles behind determining the need to apply for a permit to work for high-risk tasks. This includes planning to review the scope of the work, identify all required personnel and equipment, determine any equipment isolations that must be done, identify any simultaneous operations or SIMOPS and their compatibility with the work, and review the procedures, risk assessments, JSA’s and SWMs and define any regulatory requirements and processes that need approval.
The training suggests that you also need to document the possible emergency scenarios and how you plan to respond and notify the appropriate stakeholders of the activity and any impacts of the activity. You also need to determine how you will return to normal operations, including testing and commissioning activities.
