Working at heights is a high-risk activity and a leading cause of death and serious injury. Working at heights is a high-risk activity and a leading cause of death and serious injury. Working at heights means work above 6 feet or 2 metres where 6 feet or 2 metres is measured from ground to foot.
Fall hazards are found in many workplaces where work is carried out at height, for example, stacking shelves in warehouses and retail outlets, working on a roof, unloading a large truck or accessing silos. Falls can also occur at ground level into holes, for example, trenches or service pits.
This course discusses the most common fall hazards in the workplace and works through the hierarchy of controls to control these risks.
The training advocates to eliminate these hazards with a focus on working at ground level or on a solid construction where practicable. Substitution, Isolation and Engineering control examples are provided where elimination of the hazard is impractical, including fall prevention, working from a ladder, scaffolding and work platforms. Fall arrest systems are explained, along with establishing ‘no go’ zones when work from heights is in progress.
